“Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak // Dir. David Lynch (lost video concept)
Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” is a damn near flawless song that channels more heartache, sensuality, and melancholy into four minutes than some major films do in two hours. The original video was directed by Herb Ritts and featured black and white footage of Isaak and model, Helena Christensen, rolling around on a sandy beach. It was a sexy video for a sexy song. The song also happened to be featured in the David Lynch film, “Wild At Heart” (featuring some classic Nicholas Cage batshit moments), and in featuring it, Lynch also cut his video to the song that has languished in VHS hell for a couple of decades now. Dangerous Minds have gone and dug up the Lynch version and plopped it online for all of us to enjoy all over again. Last year there were no fewer than four solid cover versions of this track floating around, so maybe it’s due for a renaissance. I’m all for dusty, windblown melancholy that gives chills. Watching this makes me miss old school David Lynch (circa 90-01). That man was a nightmare machine spitting out beautiful images and cryptic riddles that will never grow old.
